Mapped SMB drives show 'network path not found' after Windows resume while domain credentials still valid
Environment
Corporate Windows 11 laptops joined to AD domain (domain controller on VLAN A), users connect over Wi‑Fi enterprise (WPA2-Enterprise) and use persistent mapped network drives to a file server on VLAN B through a routed firewall; group policies manage drive mappings.
Symptoms
After resuming from sleep, Windows Explorer shows mapped drives with red X and 'network path not found' when accessed. ipconfig shows valid IPv4 address and ping to file server IP succeeds from the laptop, but UNC path access and Net Use return 'System error 53'. Rebooting restores drive mappings.
Observations
Event Viewer contains repeated Network Provider events ID 2022 'The network location cannot be reached' and Kerberos logs show no immediate authentication failures. Attempting to access \fileserver epo from cmd returns error 53, but smbclient from a WSL shell can connect using same credentials. 'net use' shows connection status 'Disconnected'. Credential Manager lists saved domain credentials. Disabling and re-enabling Wi‑Fi restores continuity temporarily.
Already attempted
Disabled 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' for Wi‑Fi adapter and tested — did not consistently fix issue. Flushed DNS and restarted Workstation service — sometimes regained access. Mapped drives created via Group Policy and via persistent net use behave the same. No firewall changes done recently.
Question
What causes mapped SMB drives to become unreachable after resume despite IP connectivity, and how can I make drive mappings resilient across sleep/resume without requiring a user reboot?
