External USB‑C/Thunderbolt dock causes external 4K60 monitor to flicker and re-detect during GPU‑heavy workloads on Windows laptop
Environment
Windows 11 laptop with discrete GPU (Optimus setup) connected to a USB‑C/Thunderbolt dock that drives a 4K60 external monitor via DisplayPort MST. Issue reproduces when running GPU‑accelerated applications or video playback.
Symptoms
During gameplay or GPU‑accelerated video playback, the external monitor briefly blacks out and Windows reports the monitor was disconnected and reconnected; fullscreen apps lose focus. The laptop display remains stable. The problem is intermittent but reproducible under sustained GPU load and typically happens within a few minutes of peak activity.
Observations
Directly connecting the monitor to the laptop's built‑in USB‑C port (bypassing the dock) eliminates the flicker. Replacing the cable with a certified DisplayPort/USB‑C cable reduces but does not eliminate occurrences. Event Viewer contains 'display driver stopped responding and has recovered' entries around the same timestamps as the flickers. Updating graphics drivers and dock firmware was attempted (current at time of testing). No overheating spikes observed on CPU; GPU temperature increases as expected under load.
Already attempted
Updated GPU drivers, updated dock firmware, replaced USB‑C cable, tested with direct connection (no issue), tried a different dock (same model behaves better but still shows occasional glitch), changed Windows power plan to 'High performance', adjusted graphics settings to favor integrated GPU (reduced occurrences but reduced performance).
Question
What are likely causes for a dock-connected external monitor to intermittently re-enumerate under GPU load on an Optimus laptop, and what reversible tests and mitigations can I perform to determine whether the dock, GPU driver, or power management is at fault?
