MacBook Pro fans at 100% and kernel_task spikes when Thunderbolt 4 dock with dual 4K displays is connected
Environment
MacBook Pro (Apple Silicon or Intel variant) running macOS 13.6, connected to a Thunderbolt 4 dock feeding two 4K@60Hz displays, external NVMe enclosure and Ethernet. Issue reproducible immediately after connecting dock via a single Thunderbolt cable.
Symptoms
On connection to the dock, fans ramp to maximum and 'kernel_task' CPU rises to 80–100% for sustained periods. System becomes noisy and thermally throttled; GPU-accelerated applications stutter. Disconnecting the dock immediately returns fans and CPU usage to normal.
Observations
Activity Monitor shows kernel_task as top CPU consumer (not a single user process). Console logs show repeated Thunderbolt/USB device attach entries and occasional kernel messages referencing 'IOThunderbolt' and 'AppleUSB' timeouts. Energy Saver and display sleep settings unchanged. No third-party kexts installed beyond vendor-supplied dock driver (if any).
Already attempted
Tested with: (a) single external display — issue reduced but not entirely gone, (b) connecting displays directly via adapter without dock — system stable, (c) booting into Safe Mode — kernel_task CPU lower but reappears when dock is attached. Updated macOS to latest 13.6 minor update; dock firmware update attempted (vendor tool) but behavior persisted.
Question
What are likely causes of kernel_task heating/fan runaway when the Thunderbolt dock with dual displays is connected, and what safe diagnostics and mitigations can I try before involving Apple or dock vendor support?
